Learning About Batik: The Art of Painting on Cloth
Originating from Indonesia, this form of artistic expression continuous to gain prominence in various places all over the world. By definition, it is described as a textile art that utilises a specialised method of dye application on silk or cotton. It constitutes a wide array of prints such as insects, birds, flowers, plants, and geometric forms. In the modern day where technological advancement is dominant in various aspects, computers are now being tapped to produce more intricate and modern designs.
This artistry basically has two types. These are:
Hand-painted
As the term implies, this points to the traditional process. The artist needs to be precise to be able to come up with a quality output. Brushes of varying sizes are being exhausted in this procedure. First, a cut linen is being stretched over a metal or a wooden frame. Second, the canting is then filled with a liquid wax with the utensil being held at a certain angle. Once it has dried, the next step is to paint the parts that are not covered. Finally, the wax is then removed and the fabric is rinsed.
Block-printed
In this manner, a padded table is used to hold the measured cloth. The block is dipped to a pot to be glazed with wax. It is then repeatedly pressed against the fabric until the entire space has been covered with the patterns. Depending on the requirements of the design, the printer can change between different blocks. Once the mechanism is completed, the silk will then be soaked in dye. In polychrome patterns, the progression will start from the lighter colours to the darker ones.
The following are the basic materials used for creating such works of art.
Cloth. Being the basic component, the ones made from natural fibres are commonly used. Examples of this are muslin, cotton, silk, or linen. If the goal is to create an intricate print, it is crucial to have a fabric that has a high thread count. Synthetic fibres are discouraged as they cannot sufficiently hold the dye.
Frames. The size and flexibility are two important considerations. Stretcher bars or old picture casings can be utilised. To reduce tears, a masking tape is used to secure the craft.
These stylish prints on textiles are used for virtually all types of clothing. In fact, numerous swimwear brands use such designs to create unique pieces of beach apparel.
